Mitch McKee's PFL Debut: Title Shot on the Line Against Sergio Pettis
Mitch McKee is set to make a significant impact in his Professional Fighters League (PFL) debut, facing former Bellator MMA champion Sergio Pettis in the main event of PFL Chicago this Saturday. This high-stakes bout presents McKee with a direct path to a bantamweight title shot should he emerge victorious.
Reflecting on his transition to the PFL and the unexpected main event opportunity against Pettis, McKee revealed that the fight was proposed to him about five months ago. Initially, PFL had a different opponent in mind for his debut, but when the chance to face Pettis arose, McKee readily accepted.
"Yeah, I signed with PFL last Fall, and then they inquired about a different opponent. I agreed, but a week or two later, they asked if I'd prefer to fight Sergio Pettis instead. His previous opponent, whoever that was, I'm unsure. So, I said yes almost immediately. I've known about it for approximately five months now. It's been a positive experience."
"It's been beneficial to have this five-month window to prepare thoroughly and execute a strong fight camp."
While focused on the immediate challenge, McKee acknowledges the significant career advancement this fight represents. He views it as a pivotal moment that could propel him into title contention.
"That's precisely why I agreed – for the opportunity. I wouldn't pass up a chance like this. My coaches and I are confident that I'm ready for this level of competition. Securing a win next weekend will certainly put me in discussions for a title shot. I'm approaching this as my PFL debut, a high-risk, high-reward scenario, and I always bet on myself."
McKee Opted for PFL's Vision Over UFC's Contender Series
The magnitude of the PFL bout comes after McKee's contract negotiations involved discussions with both PFL and the UFC. While the UFC proposed a path through the Dana White's Contender Series, PFL offered a more immediate and developmental approach.
"After my knockout last September, we immediately entered into discussions with both PFL and the UFC. The UFC suggested I wait and participate in the Dana White's Contender Series. Meanwhile, PFL expressed a strong desire to provide me with opportunities and foster my growth, which is exactly what they've done. It felt like they genuinely wanted to invest in me, rather than just placing me as another fighter on their roster, as might have been the case with the UFC. They offered me this significant opportunity right after I signed, demonstrating their commitment to maximizing my potential. I believe this is a perfect matchup."
McKee's PFL debut was originally slated for an earlier date and potentially a different city. However, the eventual arrangement in Chicago, as the main event, is a welcome development, especially for his family and friends from Minnesota.
"Initially, when we discussed it in the Fall, the plan was perhaps a co-main event in Pittsburgh. They then switched it to the Chicago main event, which I appreciate even more, as many of my family and friends are from Minnesota, making it easier for them to attend and support me. I've already spoken with my wife's family, and they're renting a 12-passenger van to bring a large group. I anticipate a strong contingent cheering me on in the arena. I'm genuinely excited about this opportunity, the matchup, and the chance to compete again."
