Euroleague Clubs Divided on Expansion

October 8, 2026Максим Левашов2 мин

Euroleague clubs are experiencing internal divisions. While decisions were thought to be unanimous, at least two distinct viewpoints have emerged. One faction, reportedly including Real Madrid, Panathinaikos, ASVEL, and Fenerbahçe, holds different views from another group, which includes Barcelona, Olympiacos, and others.

The expansion of Euroleague franchises was a key topic for discussion in Como. Clubs met to consider the addition of new teams. However, the NBA had previously stated that any expansion would result in the withdrawal of their current proposal. Consequently, the expansion project has been put on hold.

The expansion proposal faced strong opposition and was granted an additional review period. Some clubs described the proposal as "horrible" and even used the term "colonialism." A 30-day extension has reportedly been granted to allow parties to continue discussions and seek an improved agreement.

The issue of dilution resulting from new franchises entering Euroleague remains a central concern. It is challenging to support expansion while simultaneously rejecting any share in equity for new teams. The lack of clear explanations regarding the consequences of expansion, particularly the dilution of existing clubs' stakes, raises questions about the project's preparation and the initial discussions' clarity.

Dimitri Giannakopoulos, owner of Panathinaikos, shared the following message on his Instagram account:

PLAYERS AND COACHES
FANS
OWNERS
EUROPEAN BASKETBALL MANAGEMENT TOGETHER, WE HAVE TRANSFORMED THE SPORT WE LOVE INTO A COMPETITION WHERE THE NBA, I REPEAT THE NBA, THE BEST LEAGUE IN THE WORLD WANTS TO INVEST AND MAKE EUROLEAGUE PART OF THEIR WORLD.
WITH IMMENSE RESPECT BUT ALSO PRIDE IN WHAT WE HAVE FINALLY ACHIEVED (WITHOUT JORDI), WE MUST FIND A SOLUTION TOGETHER.
POSITIONS LIKE OLYMPIAKOS’S TODAY AND A FEW OTHER TEAMS HAVE NO INTEREST IN DEVELOPING THE SPORT OF BASKETBALL. THEY STILL BELIEVE THAT SUCCESS IS MEASURED BY THE AMOUNT OF MONEY LOST AT THE END OF THE YEAR. BASKETBALL IS NOT A TOY FOR THE RICH.
