Colby Covington Sues Jorge Masvidal for 2022 Miami Beach Attack, Seeks Over $50K Damages
The long-standing rivalry between Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal has once again moved from the octagon to the courtroom. Once close allies who trained together for nearly a decade at American Top Team, their relationship deteriorated into one of the UFC's most bitter feuds as their careers progressed.
This intense animosity culminated in their UFC 272 bout, where Covington, known as "Chaos," secured a decisive unanimous decision victory over his former teammate.
While many anticipated the feud would conclude after their in-cage encounter, the animosity only escalated. Weeks later, Masvidal, also known as "Gamebred," attacked Covington outside Papi Steak in Miami Beach, catching him by surprise as he left the restaurant. This incident led to Masvidal facing serious legal charges, including aggravated battery and criminal mischief.
After a series of court proceedings, the case against Masvidal concluded in November 2023. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to time already served, along with an order to cover the legal costs. Despite the severity of the charges, which carried a potential sentence of up to 15 years, Masvidal avoided additional jail time.
Now, in April 2026, Colby Covington has reignited the legal battle, filing a new lawsuit against Jorge Masvidal stemming from the 2022 attack.
Covington Seeks Over $50,000 in Damages from Masvidal for 2022 Miami Assault
On March 23, Colby Covington formally filed a civil lawsuit in Miami-Dade County, seeking more than $50,000 in damages related to the steakhouse attack in 2022. According to court documents, Covington's legal team asserts that his clear victory at UFC 272 enraged the Miami native, who allegedly issued a direct threat during his post-fight interview, stating he would "break his f*cking jaw" if he saw Covington on the streets.
Covington's attorneys argue that Masvidal's attack was deliberate and intended to inflict severe harm. They claim "Chaos" sustained both head and physical injuries from the incident. Additionally, the lawsuit alleges that Covington's Rolex watch was damaged, incurring an estimated cost of $15,000.
Colby Covington has requested a jury trial for the case; however, no court date has been scheduled following the lawsuit's filing.
