BKFC Bantamweight Title Vacant: Ex-Champ and Promoter Speak Out
A significant development has occurred within the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) bantamweight division. Promoter David Feldman recently announced that the 135-pound title is now vacant.
Feldman explained that former champion Justin Ibarrola voluntarily relinquished the title. According to Feldman, Ibarrola felt he wasn't ready to embrace the responsibilities of being a BKFC champion at this time, expressing a desire to explore other ventures, potentially including gloved boxing. Feldman clarified that while Ibarrola recently competed and won in a boxing event outside BKFC, this was not the reason for the title relinquishment. Instead, Ibarrola cited a lack of maturity and readiness to fully commit to the role and responsibilities of a BKFC world champion.
Feldman emphasized the organization's respect for Ibarrola, acknowledging his contributions to BKFC's growth in South Florida. He stated that Ibarrola would continue to fight for BKFC, but not as a champion, as the demands of the title conflicted with Ibarrola's desire for more flexibility in his career.
Ibarrola himself provided a brief statement on his decision, confirming his intention to remain active in BKFC but wishing to move freely, a privilege not afforded to a reigning champion.
Meanwhile, a new championship bout for the vacant bantamweight strap has already been scheduled. Former WBO super featherweight champion Jamel Herring will face ex-UFC flyweight Nate Maness at BKFC 89 on May 22nd in Palm Desert, California, with the winner claiming the undisputed title.
