UFC Heavyweight Champion Tom Aspinall Targets 2026 Return Following Eye Injury
UFC Heavyweight Champion Tom Aspinall has delivered optimistic news for fans and the division, signaling his strong intention to return to the octagon later in 2026.
Aspinall, who was elevated from interim to undisputed champion last year after Jon Jones's retirement, faced a devastating setback in his first title defense. At UFC 321, his bout against Ciryl Gane prematurely ended in the first round due to accidental double eye pokes, rendering him unable to continue.
The injury required significant medical attention, with Aspinall undergoing surgery on both eyes last month. Complications post-surgery initially prevented him from even light training, raising concerns about his career future.
However, the British fighter's latest update suggests a turning point. Aspinall addressed questions about a potential 2026 return, stating:
“I hope so. I think so. They are giving me the indication that everything is going in the right direction, and I am improving fast. There was a time when things were all up in the air because we had some complications with it, but everything now is moving good, and I’m feeling a lot better.”
Aspinall candidly shared his fears during the recovery period, revealing he contemplated life without MMA. "I just thought about what I am going to do for the rest of my life. I’ve been involved in martial arts since I was 8 years old… Without being able to do any kind of martial arts." He concluded with a positive outlook, adding:
“That’s all in the past, mate. I’m out of the dark, and we’re moving towards the light, so I’m absolutely buzzing.”
Aspinall Reacts to Interim Heavyweight Title Fight
With Aspinall sidelined, the UFC has scheduled an interim heavyweight title clash between Alex Pereira and Ciryl Gane for UFC Freedom 250 on June 14. Aspinall commented on the matchup, acknowledging its necessity:
“I mean, who else is going to fight? The division’s on its a*s. There’s not many big fights to make, is there? So they’ve got to do what they’ve got to do.”
He confirmed his intention to face the winner of that bout, expressing a particular desire for revenge against Ciryl Gane.
“Obviously, I want to fight the winner of that. Just waiting now to get the green light, the all clear from the doctor to start training properly again. As soon as we can start training properly again, full contact in the gym, we will be getting a fight date booked to fight the winner.”
Aspinall awaits full medical clearance before scheduling his return to active competition.
