Sean O'Malley: The Unwavering Dream of a UFC Star
UFC star Sean O’Malley recently opened up about his humble beginnings, revealing that he always harbored an ambition to become a UFC fighter, never considering a backup career plan. At the age of 18, O’Malley packed his bags and left home with very limited funds, determined to chase his ultimate goal of fighting in the UFC.
The former UFC bantamweight champion, who hones his skills at The MMA Lab in Arizona under the guidance of coach Tim Welch, shared his early journey with Daniel Cormier. O’Malley recounted how he saved $2,000 and then endured intense training, getting "kicked around" for 10 straight days by tough Mexican fighters. Despite the grueling experience, his sights were firmly set on signing with the UFC, and he never wavered in his relentless pursuit.
He vividly recalled the initial invitation from Welch: “Tim [Welch] came down to commentate on a fight when I was 18 years old. He was in Arizona. He was like, ‘Hey, if you want to train at a real gym, come down for two weeks. let me know.’ Came down. It was 10 days. I’ve never flown or been out of the state by myself. Flew to Mesa, Arizona. Tim picked me up in his Mazda, and I could not believe I was in Arizona going to train.”
After that initial stint, O'Malley returned home, worked full-time to save up, and then made the definitive move. He explained, “I flew back home, worked full-time, saved up 2000 dollars, packed my Nissan, and drove to Arizona, and there was no plan B. I was going to be in the UFC, and I was going to make it happen.”
Finally, in 2017, O’Malley's persistence paid off. On Dana White’s Contender Series 2, he secured a first-round knockout victory over Alfred Khashakyan, earning him a coveted UFC contract. Later that year, he made a successful promotional debut at the TUF 26 finale, defeating Terrion Ware by unanimous decision.
Today, "Suga" Sean O’Malley stands as one of the company's biggest stars, boasting an impressive UFC record of 11 wins, 3 losses, and 1 draw.
Sean O’Malley's Recent and Upcoming Fights
After losing his bantamweight title to Merab Dvalishvili in 2024 and failing to reclaim it in a 2025 rematch, Sean O’Malley most recently returned to winning ways at UFC 324, defeating Song Yadong and snapping his two-fight losing streak.
The 31-year-old American is now slated to be part of the UFC Freedom 250 lineup, where he will face Aiemann Zahabi on June 14 at the White House. A significant victory in this upcoming bout could position Sean O’Malley for another shot at reclaiming the title he lost in 2024.
