Reinier de Ridder Shifts to Light Heavyweight After Consecutive UFC Middleweight Losses
Reinier de Ridder, widely known as "RDR," has officially confirmed his departure from the UFC middleweight division. The accomplished Dutch fighter recently declared his decision to transition to the light heavyweight category, following a series of challenging bouts.
This strategic move comes in the wake of two consecutive defeats for de Ridder. Most recently, at UFC 326, he faced Caio Borralho, where he was largely outmaneuvered, ultimately losing by unanimous decision. This followed a tough contest at UFC Vancouver in October, a grueling battle against Brendan Allen that resulted in a TKO loss after four rounds when de Ridder was forced to retire on his stool.
Despite these recent setbacks, de Ridder quickly made a significant impact on the UFC middleweight landscape since his debut in November 2024. He compiled an impressive four-fight winning streak, securing notable victories over opponents such as Kevin Holland, Bo Nickal, and even former champion Robert Whittaker, thereby putting the entire division on high alert.
The announcement of his divisional change was delivered in a rather distinctive and lighthearted manner. On Wednesday morning, de Ridder posted a video on Instagram showing him distributing donuts to his teammates at Kill Cliff FC. The accompanying caption read, "Drowning my sorrow in donuts and BIG NEWS," as he humorously informed his training partners the treats were intended to keep them "heavy and strong" before confirming his planned move to the UFC's light heavyweight division. Interestingly, even after his loss to Borralho, de Ridder expressed a degree of satisfaction with his overall performance in the fight.
A transition to the 205-pound weight class is not entirely new territory for the 35-year-old Dutchman. During his tenure with ONE Championship, "RDR" competed successfully at both light heavyweight and heavyweight, where he notably captured both the middleweight and light heavyweight titles.
Reinier de Ridder currently holds a professional mixed martial arts record of 21 wins and 4 losses, with a 4-2 record specifically within the UFC. Out of his 21 career victories, an impressive 18 were secured by finish, comprising five knockouts and thirteen submissions.
