Paulo Costa Targets Khamzat Chimaev Across Two Weight Divisions
UFC fighter Paulo Costa, preparing for a move to the light heavyweight division, continues to keep his focus squarely on reigning middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev.
The animosity between Chimaev and Costa is well-known, with "The Eraser" openly stating his eagerness to settle their differences inside the Octagon someday.
In a recent interview, Costa humorously dismissed the idea of Khamzat Chimaev ever using his "Secret Juice." He quipped, "I don’t think so. I think he is looking fatty. Fat a*s. This guy does [not] deserve secret juice. Secret juice is for nice people. He is not nice.”
Costa is currently slated to face the undefeated Azamat Murzakanov on April 11 at UFC 327. Following this bout, he intends to actively pursue a fight with Chimaev.
Costa Open to Fighting Chimaev at 185 lbs or 205 lbs
During the same interview, Paulo Costa clarified that after a significant victory at UFC 327, he would consider moving back down to middleweight for a potential fight with Khamzat Chimaev, or alternatively, wait for Chimaev to ascend to the light heavyweight division. He stated:
“I’ve always made it public that I want to fight him [Khamzat Chimaev]. It’s about UFC. If UFC wants to make that fight one day, I’m ready. He’s a champion right now. I think after a good victory against Azamat on April 11, I can come back at middleweight to be in line to fight him, or I can wait for him at 205. I can fight him in both divisions. I think I’m going to enjoy 205, but I’m not closed to 185.”
The 34-year-old fighter further asserted his belief that he is the most challenging opponent for Chimaev, emphasizing:
“I think the worst match for Chimaev is me… This needs to happen [Costa vs Chimaev]. He is my goal. I am sick of him. I hope very soon we can fight.”
Chimaev, who became the UFC middleweight champion last year, is anticipated to make his initial title defense following Ramadan. Potential opponents include Nassourdine Imavov or Sean Strickland.
Reportedly, Chimaev plans to defend his 185-pound belt once before moving up to light heavyweight to pursue a second divisional championship.
