Ilia Topuria Accuses Islam Makhachev of Ducking UFC White House Fight
UFC Lightweight Champion Ilia Topuria has publicly accused Islam Makhachev of avoiding a potential fight at the highly anticipated UFC White House event, attributing Makhachev's absence to an alleged injury.
Topuria is currently set to defend his UFC lightweight championship against Justin Gaethje in the main event of UFC Freedom 250. However, recent rumors suggested an initial plan for 'El Matador' to move up a division to challenge Makhachev for the welterweight title. A long-rumored showdown between the two champions was reportedly thwarted by Makhachev's injury, forcing Topuria to shift his focus back to Gaethje. Topuria enters this bout with significant momentum, having secured three consecutive iconic knockouts against Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway, and Charles Oliveira.
In a recent candid statement, Topuria expressed his frustration, stating, "Once again, Islam comes up with an excuse. This time it’s an injury." He revealed his long-standing expectation to be part of the White House event, viewing early hesitations from the UFC as part of negotiations.
Topuria elaborated on the sequence of events: "When they finally told me I would be on the White House card, they mentioned Islam, and I didn’t hesitate for a second to accept the fight." He recounted that despite the fight not being officially confirmed, an announcement for the White House card was imminent. "When I woke, I found out that Islam had gotten injured," he added, leading to Justin Gaethje stepping in.
Addressing both fighters, Topuria declared, "Once again, someone else who will pay for Islam’s escape." He didn't mince words, criticizing their manager. Turning his attention to his upcoming opponent, he warned, "Justin, see you at the White House. I’m not someone who humiliates people. It will be quick. When you wake up, everything will already be over."
With such a strong stance, Topuria appears highly motivated, potentially setting the stage for a career-defining performance.
