David Lighty (ASVEL): "Completing the loop with NBA Europe would be incredible!"

ASVEL has formally submitted a letter of intent to the NBA, expressing its desire to join the forthcoming NBA Europe league, which is tentatively scheduled to launch in the autumn of 2027. Tony Parker, who is widely expected to take over from Pierric Poupet as head coach, is reportedly in the process of assembling his coaching and support staff. This team could include figures such as current sporting director Michel Veyronnet, along with Jo Gomis, Antoine Chevrier, Karim Atamna, Dounia Issa (who has activated her exit clause from Vichy), Old Lo (assistant at Gravelines), and Bryan George. There is also speculation about the potential involvement of well-known names like Vincent Collet, Edwin Jackson, Florent Pietrus, and Charles Kahudi. Furthermore, the possibility of veteran player David Lighty remaining on the court for the new project is also being considered.

David Lighty shared his thoughts: "Could I continue playing? Yes, we are discussing it, but there are many unknowns. With ASVEL? I certainly hope so. And to complete the loop by playing in NBA Europe would be truly amazing!"

Coach Pierric Poupet commented on Lighty's impact: "When I arrived, we won the championship, and I found him exceptional on a human level. People don't always realize how genuinely good he is and how much he helps foster group cohesion."

However, despite these ambitious plans, the club faces certain complexities. While a powerful American investment fund was reportedly observed at the LDLC Arena on February 6th during an ASVEL-Milan game, two other potential investors have recently withdrawn their interest. This situation highlights the challenges confronting Tony Parker and the Villeurbanne club, even following a recent capital increase of 21 million euros. Additionally, the "Tony Parker Adéquat Academy" might restrict its admissions from next season, focusing exclusively on professional players and the official training center.
