Brazilian Basketball Legend Marcos "Marquinhos" Leite Passes Away
The basketball world mourns the passing of Marcos Antonio Abdalla Leite, affectionately known as Marquinhos, a true Brazilian icon. The towering 2.08-meter (6'10") center, born in 1952, made history as the first Brazilian player ever drafted by an NBA franchise, the Portland Trail Blazers, in the 10th round of the 1976 draft. Despite this remarkable opportunity, Marquinhos famously declined a guaranteed contract with the Blazers to preserve his eligibility for the Brazilian national team, at a time when professional players were not permitted to represent their country.
Following three seasons at Pepperdine University, Leite continued his professional career in Europe, playing for clubs such as Athletic Genova and Virtus Bologna for three seasons. His commitment to his nation was unparalleled: he proudly represented Brazil at three Olympic Games (1972, 1980, 1984) and participated in four World Championships, where he earned a silver medal in 1970 and a bronze medal in 1978, solidifying his status as a Brazilian basketball legend.
