Berlin Plans New 15,000-Seat Arena
Berlin is poised to develop a new state-of-the-art sports arena with a capacity of 15,000 spectators. The Berlin Senate has officially endorsed this ambitious project, a confirmation provided by Senator for Sports, Iris Spranger. Reports indicate that the Senate itself proposed the site for the new facility, which is state-owned land. Marco Baldi, General Manager of Alba Berlin, is scheduled to present a comprehensive feasibility study to the parliamentary sports committee.
The estimated cost for this undertaking is several hundred million euros. While the specific funding mechanisms are still being determined, the club has disclosed that active discussions are in progress with prospective investors.
The realization of this new arena significantly increases the likelihood of Alba Berlin's inclusion in the NBA's forthcoming European league. Munich is also under consideration as a German representative, alongside major European capitals such as London, Paris, and Rome. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has expressed his aspiration for the European division to commence as early as October 2027.
Alba Berlin currently hosts its home games at the Uber Arena, which accommodates 14,500 fans for basketball. Nevertheless, the club faces substantial challenges primarily due to high rental fees. Their previously favored venue, the Max-Schmeling-Halle, with its 8,500-seat capacity, is deemed insufficient for their growing needs and is frequently unavailable, being heavily booked by other teams like Füchse Berlin and BR Volleys, in addition to various other events.
