NHL Rumors: Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Panthers Offseason Outlook
Penguins Eyeing Offseason Moves for Youth and Star Power
The Pittsburgh Penguins possess significant cap space and valuable assets, positioning them to acquire younger talent or potentially a major star, should one become available. Despite their recent performance, the Penguins' offseason strategy is unlikely to change. The upcoming period is seen as an opportune time to leverage their additional draft picks and cap flexibility to bring in new players. This approach could significantly accelerate their rebuilding efforts by integrating more young talent into the roster.
There's a possibility the Penguins might face a setback next season, especially given the strong campaigns from players like Justin Brazeau, Anthony Mantha, Tommy Novak, and Parker Wotherspoon. While the team hopes to retain Mantha, who is drawing interest in a less robust free-agent market, they are reportedly unwilling to overspend or offer a contract exceeding five years.
Should the Toronto Maple Leafs entertain the idea of trading Auston Matthews, Penguins GM Kyle Dubas is expected to inquire, given Pittsburgh's available cap space and trade assets. A potential deal might involve the Leafs requesting Ben Kindel, though Dubas's willingness to part with him is uncertain. Furthermore, questions arise about Toronto's desire to trade Matthews to Dubas's former team, and whether Matthews himself would waive his no-movement clause to join Pittsburgh.
There's a strong sentiment that this season could mark Evgeni Malkin's final year with the Penguins.
Florida Panthers Undecided on Offseason Roster Adjustments
Florida Panthers General Manager Bill Zito stated it's premature to specify what roster adjustments, whether through free agency or trades, the team will pursue this offseason.
Zito emphasized the uncertainty, explaining, "It’s too early to tell. The key factor is availability. You might identify specific needs, but if the desired assets aren't on the market or available for trade, a Plan B is essential." He acknowledged this challenge isn't unique to the Panthers, describing the process of assessing roster needs and then finding ways to acquire talent as a "never-ending puzzle." He committed to "continue to grind and try to make good decisions."
Regarding draft picks, if the Panthers secure a top-10 position post-lottery, they will retain their pick. Otherwise, their 2027 first-round pick will become unprotected and transfer to the Chicago Blackhawks (from the Seth Jones trade), and their 2028 first-round pick will become unprotected, going to the Boston Bruins (from the Brad Marchand trade).
Addressing the situation of pending unrestricted free agent goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, Zito stated, "That’s just something we’ll sort out after the season. I’d like to keep him. I hope we can. We’ll see what happens."
