UFC flyweight champion Joshua Van has voiced his strong desire to see Alexandre Pantoja receive another opportunity to compete for the world title.
Van is set to defend his UFC flyweight championship against Tatsuro Taira at UFC 328 this weekend. This will mark his inaugural title defense following his victory over Alexandre Pantoja, which saw him claim the championship belt. The circumstances of his win were influenced by an unfortunate injury sustained by Pantoja early in their bout.
Since their encounter, fans have been anticipating what a potential rematch between Joshua Van and Alexandre Pantoja might entail. Despite Pantoja being further into his career and having accumulated more fight experience, his veteran status could pose significant challenges for an opponent like Van.
In a recent interview, Joshua Van unequivocally stated his wish to face Pantoja again at a future date.
Joshua Van Discusses Alexandre Pantoja Rematch
“That chapter is closed,” Van told MMA Fighting. “My focus is solely on Taira at this moment. As I’ve said, Pantoja and I will run it back regardless after this fight. I no longer dwell on that.”
When asked about Pantoja deserving a rematch, Van stated, “Absolutely. He dominated the division. It’s only fitting that he be granted a rematch. Yes, I genuinely hope he and I can fight again.”
Van elaborated on his recent fight selection process: “When they initially contacted me about a two-week notice fight, they offered Taira or Manel, and I opted for Manel. However, that didn’t materialize. Then, for March 7th, they proposed the fight, and I accepted. It seems both declined. Now, the UFC has mandated that I face Tatsuro, and that’s final.”
“I will certainly fight all of these individuals eventually. I simply want whoever is presented. I chose Manel because he had called me out, and I wanted to settle that score, but now I have Tatsuro to contend with. After that, I’ll face whomever the UFC assigns me.”
Before his upcoming bout, Van must first successfully overcome Taira on Saturday night.
