The Boston Bruins Will Be a Tough Out for the Buffalo Sabres

NHL News

The 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs are set in the Eastern Conference, with the Boston Bruins slated to face the Buffalo Sabres. This marks Buffalo’s return to the postseason after a 14-year absence, while the Bruins are back after a year’s hiatus. Their playoff berth was secured following Boston’s decisive 4-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night.

Boston has been a significant surprise this season. Many did not anticipate them, alongside the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers, making the playoffs. General Manager Don Sweeney bolstered the roster with veteran additions like Viktor Arvidsson and Lukas Reichel, and also drafted James Hagens in the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft. Hagens has recently joined the lineup after his tenure at Boston College.

Crucial to their success has been the exceptional play of Pavel Zacha (career-best season), Morgan Geekie (career-high 39 goals), Casey Mittelstadt’s elevated performance, and the contributions of Charlie McAvoy, Hampus Lindholm, and David Pastrnak. Furthermore, having Jeremy Swayman present from the start of training camp has been a significant advantage. Players like Fraser Minten have also experienced career-best seasons.

First-year head coach Marco Sturm has instilled a winning culture in the Boston Bruins, with the team gradually coming together under his guidance. Sturm’s coaching prowess was previously demonstrated when he led Team Germany to the Gold Medal Game at the 2018 Winter Olympics, ultimately falling to Russia.

The Bruins possess valuable playoff experience, a critical factor in postseason play. In an appearance on TSN Radio in Montreal in late March, Jim Biringer of NHL Rumors.com and Full Press Media expressed his strong belief in the Boston Bruins’ potential to make a significant impact in the playoffs.

(Excerpt from NHL Rumors.com transcription):

Host: “But what about the other teams on the bubble in the National Hockey League, like those on the outside looking in, such as the Ottawa Senators, the Detroit Red Wings, the Columbus Blue Jackets? Who do you have the most faith in from that group if the playoffs were to start tomorrow?”

Jim Biringer: “I mean, this might be a controversial take, especially in Montreal, but how can you not be impressed with what the Boston Bruins are doing right now? Are they overachieving? Yes. They probably shouldn’t be in a playoff position given they are retooling. They have a goaltender who can win games in Jeremy Swayman. David Pastrnak is one of the best players in the National Hockey League.”

“However, for me, the depth and quality of the Boston Bruins, and what Don Sweeney has achieved. Pavel Zacha is playing well again. Many players are having career seasons. This momentum needs to carry over into next year as well. But for me, Boston is just a tough team to beat, and we’ve seen them make deep runs in the playoffs when no one expects them to. They play a very physical style of game, and they are a team that can cause problems when the playoffs begin.”

Everything seems to be aligning for the Boston Bruins as they head into the playoffs. This sentiment might be unwelcome in some Canadian markets, such as Toronto. Nevertheless, Sweeney’s swift turnaround of the team has been remarkable.

The Boston Bruins have a strong probability of achieving an upset in the first round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Buffalo Sabres.
