NHL Rumors: Washington Capitals and Detroit Red Wings Updates
Washington Capitals GM Addresses Alex Ovechkin’s Future
Veteran forward Alex Ovechkin, at 40 years old, is once again on pace to achieve a 30-goal season. As he approaches the final year of his current contract, there's considerable speculation regarding his future with the team. Washington Capitals General Manager Chris Patrick recently discussed Ovechkin’s situation on The Sheet with Jeff Marek.
Patrick stated, “It’s challenging to assign a percentage, but it’s certainly a strong possibility. He has a specific process he intends to follow, which involves discussions with his family, advisors, team owner Ted Leonosis, Capitals president of hockey operations Brian MacLellan, and myself. He won't be rushed; he will proceed at his own pace. Whether that concludes near the season's end or extends into the offseason, he'll complete the process his way, and we absolutely respect that decision.”
Detroit Red Wings Prioritize Prospects Over Acquiring a Top Center
The Detroit Red Wings are currently locked in a fierce battle for a playoff spot. Should they miss the postseason yet again under General Manager Steve Yzerman and his staff, it might raise questions, though there's no indication their positions are in jeopardy despite the rebuild approaching its tenth year.
The team's primary centers, Dylan Larkin and Andrew Copp, have both faced recent injuries.
Ahead of the trade deadline, the Red Wings were among several teams interested in St. Louis Blues center Robert Thomas. However, an executive involved in trade discussions with the Red Wings revealed that the team was unwilling to part with its top prospects, specifically mentioning center Nate Danielson and goaltenders Sebastian Cossa and Trey Augustine.
The Blues reportedly sought compensation equivalent to four first-round picks for Thomas. While the Red Wings possessed the necessary assets, an offer combining a first-round pick, Danielson, and either Cossa or Augustine might have compelled the Blues to seriously consider a trade. Thomas is seen as a player who could significantly address the Red Wings' needs. Sebastian Cossa is projected to serve as John Gibson's backup next season, while Trey Augustine could remain in the minor leagues for several more seasons.
