Evgeni Malkin's Contract Status: Awaiting Summer Talks with Pittsburgh Penguins
General Manager Kyle Dubas Addresses Malkin's Future with the Penguins
Pittsburgh Penguins General Manager Kyle Dubas recently provided an update on Evgeni Malkin's contract situation during an appearance on NHL Network's First Shift, hosted by EJ Hradek and Dan Rosen.
Dubas on the Negotiation Process and Team Strategy
During the interview, EJ Hradek inquired about the upcoming expiration of Malkin's contract and the team's approach to negotiating with its long-serving, iconic veteran players.
Dubas explained that the organization has maintained open and consistent communication with Malkin. He acknowledged Malkin's strong personality and his earned right to express himself, emphasizing that the team has a tailored approach for these unique situations, which differs from player to player.
He cited the in-season extension of Blake Lizotte as an example, justifying it by market conditions for centers and Lizotte's undeniable value to the team. Dubas reiterated that all decisions are ultimately made with the best interests of the Pittsburgh Penguins in mind.
However, Dubas clarified that certain players on the roster warrant a distinct and special approach, and Malkin undoubtedly falls into this category. He confirmed that discussions are ongoing with Malkin and his agent, JP Barry, and will persist as the NHL season draws to a close.
Malkin's Perspective: Optimism and Desire to Remain a Penguin
Following his five-game suspension for high-sticking Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin, reports indicated a more optimistic tone from Malkin regarding his contract discussions, compared to his previous sentiments from two weeks prior.
Malkin himself confirmed to reporters after the Penguins' 7-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche that General Manager Dubas had advised waiting until the summer to finalize negotiations. He expressed his acceptance of this timeline, stating, “I’m OK to that. We have like 15 games left, and I hope playoffs. I want to just play.”
He recounted Dubas asking if he wished to play next season, to which Malkin responded affirmatively. Dubas then reassured him, saying, “Don’t worry, we’ll talk after the season.” Malkin added, “I’m OK. I mean, I feel great. I want to play next year too, maybe two years, who knows. It’s just business.”
Evgeni Malkin has consistently stated his desire to continue playing and has no plans for retirement. His clear intent is to conclude his illustrious career as a dedicated member of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
