NBA Finals: Spurs Stumble in Opening Game Against New York

Sports News

The San Antonio Spurs experienced a night to forget in their return to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014, as they were defeated by the New York Knicks in the season’s championship opener with a score of 95-105. A significant factor in their loss was collective shooting inefficiency, hitting just 32 of 89 field goals, including a poor 11 of 45 from beyond the arc. This also affected Victor Wembanyama, who, despite putting up 26 points and 11 rebounds, shot a dismal 6 of 21 from the field, at times appearing to force plays.

Ironically, the Knicks also started the game slowly, with Jalen Brunson missing his first 7 shots. However, without consistent scoring success, the three-time All-Star took control in the closing minutes. He sank a three-pointer that put his team back in the lead (95-97, 39th minute) and then sealed the victory with a mid-range shot (95-101, 40th minute).

The Spurs now face considerable pressure and are obligated to win their next game, scheduled for Friday night to Saturday, to keep pace with the Knicks. This is a situation their teammates, including Wemby, have experienced before. They previously lost their opening game against Minnesota but went on to win the series in six games.
