Following a contentious buildup characterized by intense personal insults, Khamzat Chimaev has shed light on the unexpected sportsmanship displayed during and after his middleweight title bout against Sean Strickland at UFC 328. Despite a heated pre-fight press conference where Chimaev visibly reacted to Strickland’s provocations, the tone shifted dramatically once inside the Octagon and in the immediate aftermath of their grueling five-round contest.
The rivalry, which had escalated to a point of significant animosity, saw both fighters touch gloves multiple times during their fight. This was followed by an even more surprising display of respect when Chimaev, after losing a close split decision, personally placed the middleweight belt around Strickland’s waist. This gesture, along with a respectful exchange between their teams, caught many observers off guard given the preceding hostility.
Chimaev recently took to social media to explain this sudden change in demeanor. He revealed that the shift occurred after Strickland approached him and his corner, offering an apology for the harsh words exchanged leading up to the fight. Chimaev stated that he is not one to hold grudges when an apology is sincerely offered.
“And regarding that guy, he said a lot of unnecessary things,” Chimaev explained on his Instagram stories. “People were asking why I shook his hand and why I put the belt on him afterward. We don’t have the habit of talking or fighting after a loss. If we fight, we fight inside the cage, and we fight as best as we can. What Allah has decided is no longer in our control. That guy lowered his head and asked for forgiveness. If a person asks for forgiveness, I can forgive him. I’m not an oppressor, so I would refuse to forgive.”
Strickland, for his part, publicly apologized during his post-fight Octagon interview, acknowledging that he had “went too f*cking hard” with his pre-fight rhetoric. He expressed respect for Chimaev and the fighters from Chechnya, indicating a desire to move past the personal animosity.
