Carlos Ulberg’s Unlikely Triumph: How He Defeated the Odds and Bookmakers at UFC 327

MMA News

Carlos Ulberg entered the Kaseya Center in Miami on April 11, 2026, widely considered the underdog by bookmakers. However, he exited as the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, accomplishing this remarkable feat despite fighting on a single functional leg.

Initially, when the fight was announced, many betting platforms favored Jiří Procházka, listing him as a -142 favorite, with Ulberg at +120 to secure the vacant 205-pound title. This initial pricing appeared reasonable on paper. Procházka, a former champion, had an impressive 2025 record with two knockout victories against Jamahal Hill and Khalil Rountree Jr. His only UFC defeat was against Alex Pereira, who subsequently moved up to the heavyweight division, vacating the belt.

Carlos Ulberg’s Upset Victory at UFC 327

As fight week progressed, the betting lines saw a notable shift. By the time the main card commenced, the odds had narrowed considerably. Procházka was listed at -118, with Ulberg close behind at -102. Some platforms even had Procházka at -120 and Ulberg at +100 as of April 10. In the European decimal odds market, Procházka was at 1.83 and Ulberg at 2.00, indicating an implied probability of approximately 56.3% for Procházka and 47.6% for Ulberg.

The rationale for Procházka’s favoritism was clear. He had captured the UFC light heavyweight title in June 2022 with a submission victory over Glover Teixeira at UFC 275, becoming the first Czech UFC champion. Throughout his career, he boasted 23 first-round finishes and had never gone to a decision within the UFC octagon. His two losses were exclusively against Alex Pereira, both by second-round TKO. Entering UFC 327, Procházka was seen as the division’s most dangerous finisher, having secured consecutive finishes in 2025.

On the other hand, Ulberg carried an impressive nine-fight winning streak but had never competed for a UFC title prior to this bout. His sole UFC loss was a second-round knockout to Kennedy Nzechukwu in March 2021. Since that setback, he had defeated notable opponents like Jan Błachowicz and Volkan Oezdemir via decision, and spectacularly knocked out Alonzo Menifield in just 12 seconds – one of the fastest knockouts in light heavyweight history. He followed this with victories over Jan Błachowicz and a KO win against Dominick Reyes. Nevertheless, analysts questioned whether Ulberg had faced opponents of the same caliber as a former title challenger.

The fight took a dramatic turn for Ulberg almost immediately. In the opening minute, during an exchange, his right knee buckled as he stepped back, causing him to slip to the canvas. Replays suggested the injury resulted from an awkward landing rather than a direct strike. UFC President Dana White indicated post-fight that the knee injury could be an ACL tear, though a formal diagnosis was pending.

Procházka recognized the injury and began to target Ulberg’s legs, consistently throwing low kicks to exploit his compromised mobility. Ulberg struggled to maintain his footing, frequently leaning against the cage. To many observers, it seemed the fight was heading towards a stoppage in favor of Procházka. The bookmakers had positioned under 2.5 rounds as the most probable outcome at -115 before the fight, and the action appeared to be unfolding in that direction.

However, Ulberg managed to steady himself against the cage. He waited for an opening and landed a perfectly timed counter left hook that knocked Procházka out cold. He followed up with ground strikes, and the referee waved off the fight at 3:45 of the first round.

This victory over Procházka extended Ulberg’s winning streak to ten consecutive fights within the UFC. He became the 19th fighter to hold the undisputed UFC light heavyweight title and joined Israel Adesanya and Alexander Volkanovski as champions from the City Kickboxing gym. Despite being a modest underdog according to the bookmakers, and suffering a significant injury within the first minute, Ulberg persevered and secured the win.
