Toronto Maple Leafs Part Ways with Head Coach Craig Berube

The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced a coaching change, ending their tenure with head coach Craig Berube. General Manager John Chayka stated that the decision reflects a desire for an organizational shift and a fresh start, rather than an evaluation of Berube’s performance.

“Craig is a tremendous coach and an even better person,” said Chayka in a press release. “This decision is more reflective of an organizational shift and an opportunity for a fresh start than it is an evaluation of Craig. We are grateful for his leadership, professionalism and commitment to the Maple Leafs organization and wish Craig and his family nothing but the best moving forward.”

This move comes as the Maple Leafs aim for a new direction, a change that was anticipated following the departure of former General Manager Brad Treliving. Management, including new GM John Chayka and Senior Executive Advisor Mats Sundin, met with Berube to discuss the roster, ultimately deciding to bring in a new coach to guide the team’s future.

Berube, who was in the second year of a four-year contract signed prior to the 2024-25 season, is owed approximately $4.5 million over the next two years by the Maple Leafs, unless he secures another coaching position.

While Berube is not solely responsible for the team’s performance, the stylistic fit and roster construction this past season contributed to the team’s struggles. Injuries and other factors also played a role in the Maple Leafs’ decline in the standings. The team is now looking for a new head coach to lead them forward, with potential implications for retaining star player Auston Matthews.

Berube, a Stanley Cup champion with the St. Louis Blues in 2019, is a respected figure and is expected to find new employment in the league. The Maple Leafs now join the Los Angeles Kings and potentially the Edmonton Oilers in their search for a new bench boss. The team is considering various candidates, including experienced coaches like Bruce Cassidy or potentially a first-time head coach.
