The Anticipated Return of Caitlin Clark
Last season with the Indiana Fever, Caitlin Clark was limited to just 13 games due to a groin injury followed by a bone contusion. Despite her shortened season, she still managed to record five double-doubles and one triple-double, averaging 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 8.8 assists per game.
Unlike many WNBA players, Caitlin Clark opted out of playing overseas or participating in the 3x3 Unrivaled tournament during the offseason, choosing instead to train in Indianapolis. By December, during the U.S. national team camp at Duke, she reported feeling "great" and back to her previous form on the court. Her impressive performance and dedication evidently convinced national team director Sue Bird to select her among the twelve players for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers.
"It will probably take me a little while to get my bearings," she stated during a video press conference for the U.S. team. "I'm sure after a minute on the court, everything will be fine. But above all, I am really eager. I appreciate all the effort and time I've put in to get my body in top shape, and to come back not just to my best level, but to an even better level than at the start of last season."
While the U.S. team has already secured automatic qualification for the World Cup, this tournament presents an invaluable opportunity for USA Basketball to gain collective experience. Six players, including Clark, Angel Reese, and Paige Bueckers, are set to make their senior national team debuts in Puerto Rico. Despite her prior experience with three USA Basketball youth teams, Clark acknowledges the significantly higher expectations and responsibilities that come with playing for the senior squad.
"The number of players who progress from the U16 level to make it onto the national team is extremely small," Caitlin Clark commented. "So, participating in this World Cup Qualifier is an immense honor. I know that wearing this jersey will be a truly exceptional moment."
Her notable exclusion from the 2024 Paris Olympic team sparked considerable debate among fans and media. Her current selection, however, is a tremendous boost for the American squad, which is scheduled to face Senegal (March 11), Puerto Rico (13), Italy (14), New Zealand (15), and Spain (17). The team is expected to dominate these matches and uphold its legacy of four consecutive world titles.
