Official: Monaco Accepts Vassilis Spanoulis' Resignation
After days of speculation, AS Monaco officially confirmed on Wednesday the resignation of head coach Vassilis Spanoulis. Reportedly weary of the financial and organizational instability plaguing the Principality club, the Greek coach stepped down, and a drifting AS Monaco found itself unable to retain him.
The 43-year-old Greek basketball legend joined Monaco in November 2024, leading ASM to a historic Euroleague final and the French Championship title in 2025. Spanoulis will continue in his role as the head coach of the Greek national team.
The pressing question now facing the club is whether AS Monaco will even be able to complete the current season.
Commentary from General Manager Oleksiy Yefimov:
“I want to personally thank Vassilis. Last year, when we first met in Thessaloniki and shook hands, I had a feeling we weren't just welcoming a coach, but a true leader. Time has proven me right.
Vassilis led Monaco to its historic first Euroleague final in Abu Dhabi. He also helped the club secure its very first French Supercup and clinched the Leaders Cup for the first time in eight years. But it wasn't just about basketball. Vassilis was an inspiration to everyone within the club, and I can say I personally learned a great deal working alongside him.
I would have liked us to achieve even more together, but sometimes circumstances force you to make difficult and painful decisions. I am confident that Vassilis leaves Monaco with many positive memories and, more importantly, with the respect of everyone who worked with him and all the Roca Team fans.”
