Evan Fournier: A Return to Les Bleus Conditioned by a Call
At 32, Evan Fournier chose in the summer of 2024 to embark on a new chapter in his career, joining Olympiakos to immerse himself in the Euroleague. Eighteen months later, this decision has proven to be a resounding success. The current Greek champion with the Piraeus club, the former Orlando Magic player is seriously considering concluding his professional career with this team.
"To be honest, my intention is to finish my current contract and then retire. I don't think I'll go beyond that. While this decision isn't set in stone yet, that's the direction I'm leaning. Small daily details are increasingly making me think about it. Understand me correctly. In practice, I'm giving 150%. No one wants to win the Euroleague more than me. But there are also times, for example when traveling, where I'm fed up. I want to be with my children, travel with my wife, spend time with my parents, and generally enjoy a life that basketball has put on hold until now. I know it's not for right away. This isn't a new idea; I had already considered stopping after the Paris Olympics. Faced with a less than satisfactory NBA offer, I questioned my real motivation to restart my career at this stage. But after a short break without basketball, the urge returned, and I decided to give myself one last pleasure in Greece."
In parallel to his club career, the athlete with 12 NBA seasons has also expressed his strong desire to wear the French national team jersey again, with which he hasn't played since the Paris Olympic Games final, a match lost against the United States (87-98).
"Yes, absolutely, I will return. Well, I will come... if I'm called. Recently, Freddy played a game with Bourg in Panionios, near Athens. The next day, he came to my house for dinner, which allowed us to talk. [...] We'll see what role I might take on. He shared his perspective on what happened at the Euro and on the future of the team. I can't reveal more, as it was a private discussion. The goal was also to get to know each other better."
