Real Madrid has officially opened transfer discussions with Liverpool regarding a potential move for defender Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Confirming his departure from his boyhood club at the end of the current season, the England international announced on Monday that he is expected to sign a five-year deal with the Spanish powerhouse.
The La Liga club is reportedly eager for Alexander-Arnold, often referred to as TAA, to join them in time for the upcoming Club World Cup next month. Securing his transfer could involve a fee exceeding £1 million, although Liverpool is anticipated to negotiate hard for a higher figure.
Liverpool is set to continue covering his substantial £180,000-a-week wages until his current contract expires on June 30.
Real Madrid`s first match in the US-based tournament is scheduled for June 18 against Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal. The registration periods for new players are set from June 1 to 10, or later for the knockout stages between June 27 and July 3.
While Real initially aimed to complete the transfer for around £1 million, Liverpool could potentially demand up to £1.5 million as part of their hardball negotiations.
The 26-year-old has three matches remaining as a Liverpool player, culminating in his final appearance at Anfield against Crystal Palace on the last day of the season. He is also expected to play in the preceding games against Arsenal and Brighton.
However, his impending departure has not been met with universal approval, and he might experience a less than warm reception from some Liverpool fans during his farewell appearances.
A significant number of supporters have expressed frustration and anger following the defender`s decision to leave the club he has represented for two decades.
Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher weighed in on the situation, stating that the negative reaction towards Alexander-Arnold`s exit is “justified”.
Writing in his column, Carragher argued: “Liverpool are in the business of winning more Premier League and Champions League titles. Anything which undermines that is a threat.” He elaborated that while this competitive attitude might not be popular, it`s crucial for Liverpool`s success, akin to the mindset at clubs like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, or Manchester United. Carragher concluded: “By leaving Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold is making it harder for his own club to win its 21st league title and seventh European Cup. That is bound to stir emotions.”
Some reports have highlighted unusual negative reactions, including claims that Alexander-Arnold has been “banned” from certain businesses like Curry`s and Popworld following the news.
