Oklahoma City Thunder’s defense has become their ‘calling card’ – ESPN

The Oklahoma City Thunder`s defense has truly become their defining characteristic. A pivotal steal by Alex Caruso in Game 3 of the playoff series against the Memphis Grizzlies vividly demonstrated this. In that game, the Thunder completed one of the greatest comebacks in playoff history, completely stifling the opponent`s offense in the second half.

As Caruso put it, their defense is their “superpower”. This season, the Thunder achieved 68 wins, setting an NBA record for point differential, and their dominant defense, a blend of talent, tenacity, and teamwork, is the foundation of this success. This defense is now being tested in the series against the Denver Nuggets, facing three-time MVP Nikola Jokic.

Cleveland coach Kenny Atkinson described the Thunder`s defense as “seven pit bulls” for their speed, athleticism, and aggression. While Shai Gilgeous-Alexander stands out statistically in steals and even received Defensive Player of the Year votes, he acknowledges that his personal numbers are a result of team effort.

The primary perimeter defender is Luguentz Dort, who takes on the opponent`s best scorers. His unique combination of strength and agility makes him an incredibly difficult one-on-one matchup. As Gilgeous-Alexander told ESPN, “There`s not many guys as big and as strong as Lu that could move as well as he does laterally… He`s kind of a freak athlete in his own way. And then he`s really worked at it, understanding the game and understanding his opponents.” Isaiah Hartenstein added, “You think that he`s just a big body and it`ll be easy to screen… I don`t know how, but he can get small, too. He just gets through the screens. I think that`s what makes him special — that combination of physicality and then his agility, too.”

Dort, Caruso, and Wallace are elite man-to-man specialists, while Jalen Williams often handles the second-toughest assignment. In the paint, Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein dominate. The Thunder essentially have no weak links defensively, and all players, starting with the leaders, are fully committed to defensive principles. As Hartenstein told ESPN, “You don`t really have a weak link… When you have your stars playing at a high level defensively, everyone has to lock in.” Dort notes the difference in style, saying, “I`m good with my body… They`re really good with their hands.”

They also actively utilize help defense and double teams, turning defense into “controlled chaos” based on clear planning and constant communication. Players push each other, creating healthy competition. As Caruso told ESPN, “We haven`t said it out loud, but iron sharpens iron… You see somebody competing at a certain level, playing at a certain level, you have no choice but to match that.”

Strengthening the defense was a priority after last season, leading to the acquisitions of Caruso and Hartenstein. This allows coaches to employ varied schemes, making it difficult for opponents to find simple solutions. As Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving commented after a loss, “They rely heavily on their defensive stoppers… which there are practically five of them out there at one time.”

Statistics confirm their dominance: leading the league in steals, forced turnovers, and points scored off opponent turnovers. These numbers have only increased in the playoffs. Their defense doesn`t just prevent the opponent from scoring; it ignites their own offense. Steals and forced turnovers instantly turn into fast breaks.

This “interconnected” style of play, as coach Mark Daigneault calls it, has been the cornerstone of Oklahoma City`s success this season and their hope for advancing further in the playoffs. Reflecting on a dominant playoff win, Daigneault said, “I didn`t really look at tonight as a response as much as I looked at tonight as just us being who we are… And that`s how we`ve been all season.”
