NHL Rumors: Buffalo Sabres Could Play a Big Role in the Goalie Market

NHL News

Could the Buffalo Sabres move a goaltender or two?

According to NHL Network’s Kevin Weekes, the Buffalo Sabres may be looking to move one or two goaltenders from their roster as they plan for the upcoming season. This comes amidst a reportedly thin market for available goalies.

Jamison Coyle questioned the Sabres’ long-term strategy for their goaltending position, given their current depth. Weekes acknowledged the team’s strong stable of goalies, noting that all of them saw ice time this past season. He specifically highlighted Devin Levi, the youngest at 24, who had a solid season in the American Hockey League with the Rochester Americans. Weekes reported that Levi is drawing significant interest from other teams, including a potential fit with the Ottawa Senators, given his ties to the Montreal area and his previous junior hockey experience in Ottawa.

Weekes suggested that the Sabres might consider moving Levi, given the demand for his services. The discussion then turned to other options, such as moving Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (UPL) or sticking with Luukkonen and Alex Lyon. Weekes believes that moving UPL could be lucrative in the current goalie market.

When asked about potential replacements, Weekes speculated about free-agent options, mentioning Sergei Bobrovsky, a two-time Stanley Cup champion. While not suggesting Bobrovsky is heading to Buffalo, Weekes posited that such a move could elevate the team. He noted that acquiring a UFA like Bobrovsky wouldn’t require giving up assets, making him a thought-provoking possibility if he reaches the free-agent market.
