NHL Coaching Searches and Calgary Flames Rebuild Updates

NHL News

The National Hockey League is abuzz with coaching speculation. Veteran teams like the Los Angeles Kings and Edmonton Oilers are reportedly considering coaches such as Craig Berube and Peter Laviolette, known for their closer coaching style.

Meanwhile, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ coaching search is also active. Reports suggest that Ryan Malhotra is a strong candidate, with Jay Woodcroft also being a potential option. If David Carle were to express interest, he too would be considered.

Anaheim Ducks General Manager Pat Verbeek has stated his willingness to support his coaches pursuing head coaching opportunities, recognizing the pinnacle of the profession.

In other news, the Calgary Flames are continuing their rebuild by actively looking to move more players and contracts. Following their trade deadline moves that brought in significant draft capital, the Flames are open to trading any player except for goaltender Dustin Wolf, forwards Matvei Gridin and Matt Coronato, and defenseman Zayne Parekh.

Players like Blake Coleman, who has one year remaining on his contract at $4.9 million, are expected to attract interest from contending teams. Yegor Sharangovich, with a $5.75 million cap hit through 2030, may not fetch a substantial return due to his recent performance. Morgan Frost, who has a $4.375 million cap hit through 2027, could be a valuable trade chip for teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs, especially with a change in management there.

Connor Zary, with two years left at $3.77 million, might be a target for teams like the Montreal Canadiens, who often take chances on such players. Joel Farabee, with two years remaining at $5 million, could be a middle-six option for some teams, with the Tampa Bay Lightning potentially interested in his versatility.

It is highly unlikely the Flames will be able to move Jonathan Huberdeau’s contract. Forwards Ryan Strome and defenseman Zach Whitecloud may hold more value to the Flames internally than on the trade market.
