New York Rangers Center Vincent Trocheck Draws Significant Interest This Offseason

NHL News

The New York Rangers are expected to receive considerable interest from other NHL teams regarding center Vincent Trocheck this upcoming offseason. Despite being 32 years old and playing 67 games last season for 53 points, Trocheck remains a valuable player for his contributions, particularly in face-offs and penalty killing, and boasts a gold medal from the Olympics with Team USA.

Reports indicate that teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs have already made contact. Many successful teams could see Trocheck as a valuable addition to their lineup, especially those in a “win-now” mode or aiming to solidify their competitive standing for a playoff push. His experience and proven ability to perform multiple roles make him an attractive option.

During the past trade deadline, Trocheck was reportedly a top target, but he remained with the Rangers as the team did not receive an offer that met their valuation. It’s believed that the Rangers anticipated more teams would emerge as potential suitors during the summer months.

Acquiring Trocheck will likely require a significant price. However, the demand for a versatile and functional player like him is high across the league. Beyond the usual playoff contenders, a broader range of teams could benefit from his skills and ability to adapt to various team needs.

The Montreal Canadiens have also been mentioned as a team that could explore acquiring Trocheck, particularly to bolster their center depth. While not stating that their current center depth is depleted, it’s acknowledged as an area that could be strengthened. For Montreal, a team that needs more quality players, Trocheck could be a strategic acquisition, especially considering their aggressive approach to trades in past offseasons. Following their recent Eastern Conference Final appearance, it’s evident they have ground to make up, and moves like acquiring Trocheck before the draft could be on their agenda.

NHL Rumors: New York Rangers Center Vincent Trocheck

Chris Johnston Show: Chris Johnston on New York Rangers center Vincent Trocheck.

McKenzie: “I’ve been looking around, and I know Vincent Trocheck is number one, and we did touch on the fact that Minnesota expressed some interest at the deadline. Are there any other teams that could be looking for a player like Vinny Trocheck? At 32, he played 67 games this past season, with 53 points. He’s still a valuable center for what he does.”

Johnston: “Yes, he is, and you know, we know the Leafs have at least made contact, for example. I think a lot of teams that are, you know, a lot of the good teams, frankly, this is someone you would plug into your lineup, and you know, you know, he’s just been there, done that. He won a gold medal at the Olympics. He was dominant for Team USA in face-offs and on the penalty kill.

And so I think that when you look at teams that are in the, in the ‘win now’ mode. Or trying to, in the Leafs’ case, get back to a place where they’re competitive for a playoff spot, and you know, basically getting back to where they were. And they see that as a possibility.

Now, you know, the Rangers, for all the reasons we’ve highlighted, the fact that this guy was number one or number two on the trade board for most of the season, and was even scratched, if you remember, prior to the trade deadline. As for one of those roster protection type of issues.

You know, he didn’t get traded because they didn’t get, you know, what they needed to make it make sense from New York’s perspective. I think that there was a bet at that time that more teams would come into the picture as they moved into the summer.

But it’s, you know, it’s going to be, I think, you’re going to have to pay a fair price to get a Vinny Trocheck at this stage of his career. And so, you know, that’s kind of the tension that lies there.

But you know, there are, there are certainly a lot of teams that I think could use a player like this. And you know, maybe some different teams that we’re not focused on, because at the deadline, when you’re making that trade, it’s usually only the playoff teams. I think that there’s a wide range of teams that could use someone as functional as he is, and his ability to be versatile and perform many jobs for your team.”

McKenzie: “I wonder if Montreal could be among that list too, considering the depth they could use. It’s not to say that their depth at center is depleted, but I think that’s a hole they could still fill. Maybe you put them in the middle of your lineup, just as an example of a team.”

Johnston: “Yes, it’s pretty clear. I mean, I’m sure we’ll get into playoff talk at some point, but Montreal needs more good players, and this is a good player. And that’s not to say that’s the best use of their assets. I mean, they’re going to have to look at a number of guys out there.

But you know, it’s probably been a humbling experience, I would say, these last few days in the Eastern Conference Final for the Canadiens. Just with the way they are, you know, the gap between them and the Hurricanes. Frankly, I know there were two overtime games, but if you look at the run of play in the series, it’s pretty clear that the Canadiens have some ground to make up.

Obviously, they’re a young team, but I think they’ll look to, you know, they were trying to be aggressive at the trade deadline. They didn’t make a deal of any consequence, but I could see them revisiting that before the draft. I mean, it’s certainly been something Kent Hughes has done each of the last few offseasons; he’s made some big trades leading into the draft, and I would expect they’ll be aggressive again.
