Le Portel’s decline continues as the club, already certain to be relegated to Élite 2 and having not secured a single victory in the league this season (with their only recorded win being rescinded), has formally requested judicial administration. This move aims to prevent imminent cessation of payments and provide a lifeline for the northern French club.
The judicial administration process would grant ESSM (Entente Sportive Six-Fours-les-Plages) a temporary reprieve by freezing its debts, allowing time to stabilize its operations. However, this request is not guaranteed to be granted. According to BeBasket, the team could face judicial liquidation as early as this Thursday, the date it is scheduled to appear before the Commercial Court of Boulogne. In such a scenario, the club’s operations would cease immediately.
Le Portel’s Future League Status Uncertain
Even if the initial court hearing is favorable, it does not guarantee the club’s continued presence at the highest level of French basketball. Judicial administration would permit Le Portel to play in Élite 2, but they would still need to gain approval from the DNCCG (Direction Nationale du Conseil et du Contrôle de Gestion) of the LNB (Ligue Nationale de Basket).
Should the DNCCG not be convinced and decide to relegate ESSM to NM1 (National Masculin 1), the French Basketball Federation would then have to decide on the club’s participation in the third tier of French basketball, or potentially place them in even lower divisions. In summary, Le Portel’s future remains highly uncertain.
