Islam Makhachev Responds to Ian Machado Garry: “I’m Awaiting the Contract”

MMA News

Islam Makhachev has fired back at Ian Machado Garry, asserting that any delay in their potential fight is not due to his injuries but rather the UFC’s pending contract. Garry had recently criticized the champion, suggesting a shift in timelines for his return and labeling him a “princess.”

In a direct reply on social media, Makhachev stated, “Don’t worry about my injuries. I’m ready at any time. I’m waiting for the contract.” This statement comes after Garry’s social media post highlighted inconsistencies regarding Makhachev’s availability, mentioning a hand injury, Dana White’s suggestion of an August return, and Makhachev’s own hints at a July comeback.

Garry’s eagerness stems from his pursuit of a welterweight title shot. Following recent victories over Carlos Prates and Belal Muhammad, Garry is considered a top contender for the welterweight crown, with UFC’s 2026 outlook listing him among the primary challengers alongside Michael Morales.

The confusion surrounding the fight’s timeline seems to originate from differing accounts of Makhachev’s health. In March, UFC President Dana White alluded to “some hand issues” affecting Makhachev, without specifying the severity or duration of the absence. Subsequent reports indicated White had downplayed a July return, pointing instead to August. This discrepancy was the focus of Garry’s online commentary.

The welterweight division’s future title picture remains fluid, with multiple contenders vying for position. Makhachev is reportedly considering his options for his first welterweight defense, and reports have mentioned other potential opponents, including Kamaru Usman and Michael Morales, indicating Garry is not the sole contender being considered.

Islam Makhachev, the reigning UFC welterweight champion and former lightweight king, secured the lightweight belt in 2022 and defended it successfully four times. He then moved up to claim the welterweight title by defeating Jack Della Maddalena via unanimous decision at UFC 322 in November 2025. He is widely recognized as one of the sport’s top pound-for-pound fighters.

Despite the ongoing speculation, Garry has actively pursued his title aspirations by securing wins and maintaining visibility. Makhachev’s latest response shifts the narrative away from his injury status and places the ball squarely in the UFC’s court regarding the fight contract.
