UFC welterweight Daniel Rodriguez has spoken out about his recent release from an eight-month prison sentence in Tijuana, Mexico. The fighter was apprehended for marijuana possession after forgetting he had less than an ounce of the substance in his possession while traveling to Rosarito after a victory over Kevin Holland.
Rodriguez recounted the incident to TMZ Sports, explaining that he was heading to Rosarito for a weekend getaway and completely overlooked the marijuana. He initially expected a short detention but ended up serving eight months.
Initially, Mexican officials pursued smuggling charges, which are considered a felony. However, Rodriguez’s legal team successfully navigated the situation, resulting in his eventual release after the extended period.
Looking ahead, Daniel Rodriguez, currently on a three-fight winning streak, revealed that he has received and accepted an offer to face former champion Leon Edwards at UFC 329, slated to occur during International Fight Week. This bout will mark Rodriguez’s return to the octagon following his incarceration.
