Anaheim Ducks Free Agents, and Maple Leafs Will Discuss Trades for Any Player Except Auston Matthews

NHL News

The Anaheim Ducks, who have substantial salary cap space, are facing key decisions regarding their restricted free agents (RFAs). Forwards Leo Carlsson and Cutter Gauthier are expected to command significant salary increases, and management’s history suggests potentially difficult negotiations. While talks have not yet begun, both parties aim for resolution before training camp. Defensemen Pavel Mintyukov and Olen Zellweger are also RFAs, and given the Ducks’ depth on defense, teams are expected to inquire about their availability.

On the unrestricted free agent (UFA) front for the Ducks, veteran defensemen Jacob Trouba, John Carlson, and Radko Gudas are among those whose contracts are expiring. Trouba was paired with Jackson LaCombe. The Ducks acquired Carlson at the trade deadline for a first-round pick, and no contract discussions have occurred yet. Gudas has served as the team’s captain.

Up front, the Ducks have forwards Ross Johnston, Jansen Harkins, and Jeffrey Viel, who brought a physical presence to the team. Viel became a regular player.

Meanwhile, the Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly open to discussing trades for any player on their roster, with the notable exception of Auston Matthews. This stance suggests the team views Matthews as a crucial part of their future. While not indicating a desire to trade everyone else, the Leafs are exploring creative avenues to improve the team and are therefore willing to consider moving other significant players.
