Claude Giroux, the 38-year-old pending unrestricted free agent forward for the Ottawa Senators, has expressed his desire to continue playing for another season. His agent confirmed that Giroux “wants to play for sure” and indicated his preference to remain with the Senators if he plays next year. While discussions about a new contract have not yet commenced, it is anticipated that an agreement could be reached relatively quickly. Last season, Giroux signed a deal worth $2 million, with potential bonuses up to $2.75 million based on games played and playoff performance. A similar contract structure, including incentives for reaching certain game milestones and playoff success, would likely be considered for the upcoming season.
The Ottawa Senators are also actively evaluating their goaltending options to secure a reliable backup for Linus Ullmark. Veteran goaltender James Reimer has demonstrated he can still perform effectively and could be a viable candidate for a one-year agreement. Additionally, Leevi Merilainen is being considered as an internal option, though the team is also exploring the broader goalie market.
Several external goaltending prospects are being monitored. Pittsburgh Penguins UFA Tristan Jarry is reportedly a top target, offering a potential opportunity without the pressure of being a primary starter, though contract terms and financial considerations might be a factor. Connor Ingram of the Edmonton Oilers, also a UFA, could be available if the Oilers opt not to re-sign him, potentially leading to a one-year deal with less competition. Frederik Andersen, a UFA from the Carolina Hurricanes, has seen his value potentially increase following a strong playoff performance, having earned $2.75 million last year.
A more challenging acquisition could be Jesper Wallstedt from the Minnesota Wild, as the Wild are believed to be seeking a significant return, potentially including forward Brady Tkachuk, in any trade involving the young goaltender.
