Should Manchester City secure qualification for the Champions League, Matheus Nunes will undoubtedly be hailed as a hero at the Etihad Stadium. Few could have predicted such a pivotal role for him.
The midfielder, a £52 million signing, emerged as an unexpected match-winner, dramatically scoring deep in added time.

Nunes has had a challenging period at the Etihad since his move from Wolves in the summer of 2023. Recently, he`s been deployed successfully as a temporary full-back under Pep Guardiola, but his role as the decisive goalscorer in this match was unforeseen.
The crucial Champions League qualification clash appeared headed for a draw until substitute Jeremy Doku made a decisive run down the left flank. His sharp low cross swept across the goalmouth, finding Nunes arriving at the back post to tap it in.
Bernardo Silva also scored, making it a memorable night for Manchester City`s Portuguese contingent under Pep Guardiola.
This dramatic turn came after it seemed Marcus Rashford, returning to Manchester, would be the key figure. He had calmly converted a first-half penalty that appeared likely to secure a point for his side. Ultimately, however, his effort wasn`t enough, and this result puts City firmly on track for Champions League qualification.

Ollie Watkins had previously expressed frustration at being left out against PSG, and he was once again named among the substitutes. Nevertheless, the visiting team arrived with impressive form, having won 10 of their last 11 matches across all competitions and five consecutive league games, justifying Unai Emery`s tactical decisions.
Marcus Rashford, starting in Watkins` stead, nearly scored immediately, hitting the post within the opening 30 seconds. Receiving a pass from Youri Tielemans, he skillfully evaded Ruben Dias and struck a low shot that rebounded off the post into Stefan Ortega`s hands. As a Manchester United academy product, a goal at the Etihad would have been particularly sweet, but it was not to be.
Bernardo Silva opened the scoring for City. His shot found the back of the net, though Aston Villa`s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emi Martinez might believe he could have saved it. For Silva, whose future has been the subject of recent speculation, scoring his first goal since Boxing Day was a significant moment.
However, City`s lead was short-lived, lasting just eleven minutes. Controversy arose when Ruben Dias challenged Jacob Ramsey in the penalty area. Referee Craig Pawson initially dismissed the appeals, but VAR intervened. After reviewing the incident on the monitor, Pawson awarded a penalty. While replays indicated contact from Dias`s knee, some felt Ramsey went down with minimal provocation. The decision incensed the home fans and Pep Guardiola, who received a yellow card for his protests.

Undeterred by the controversy, Marcus Rashford stepped up and confidently sent Stefan Ortega the wrong way from the penalty spot, netting his fourth goal for his team.
Despite facing periods of inconsistent form, Rashford has a notable record against Manchester City and once again troubled Guardiola`s side. This marked his fifth goal against them during the Spaniard`s nine-year tenure, a tally surpassed only by Mohamed Salah and Jamie Vardy.
Despite the setback, City regained their composure and dominated possession, creating several decent chances. For Villa, Omar Marmoush, who has been a positive addition to their season, saw his cross flick off Kevin De Bruyne`s head and go straight to Martinez.
At the other end, Villa threatened again when Nico O’Reilly crossed from the left, finding Omar Marmoush who headed over.
Also for Villa, Rashford broke through the City defence, but Stefan Ortega stood firm and prevented him from scoring.
Before the match, some City fans protested the club`s ticketing policies, with some choosing not to attend. However, those present witnessed an entertaining first half. Beyond vying for Champions League places, these teams could potentially face each other again in the FA Cup final next month.
The second half saw more chances, primarily for City, with defenders Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias both coming close to scoring.
Kevin De Bruyne delivered a superb long pass that James McAtee controlled, but his attempted lob over Martinez narrowly missed the post.
McAtee, playing in a temporary forward role, also couldn`t make clean contact with a good low cross from O`Reilly.
Mark Halsey`s View on the Penalty
By Mark Halsey, Former Premier League referee
Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey analyzed the penalty decision, stating he wouldn`t have given it in real time as it was “normal contact”. He criticized the VAR intervention, calling it subjective and “not a clear and obvious error”. Halsey added that Pawson should have trusted his initial decision at the monitor.
The Premier League match centre posted: “VAR checked the referee’s call of no penalty to Aston Villa for a challenge by Dias on Ramsey – and deemed there was a clear trip and recommended an on-field review. The referee overturned the original decision and awarded a penalty.”
But Halsey maintained: “It wasn`t a trip. Pawson should have been stronger when he was sent to the monitor and stuck to his original decision.”
On Guardiola`s reaction, Halsey commented: “Guardiola was frustrated and rightly so but he cannot act like that on the touchline. He needs to set an example.”

City had an impressive record of 14 consecutive home wins against Villa coming into this match, but Villa presented a significant challenge on this occasion.
Aware of Villa`s threat on the counter-attack, the home side were cautious about overcommitting players forward.
Villa`s counter-attacking danger was evident when former City youth player Morgan Rogers set up Marcus Rashford, who rounded Ortega but shot into the side netting.
Omar Marmoush thought he had scored a late winner for Villa, but his goal was disallowed for offside.
Villa appeared to have settled for a draw, but City pushed for a winner, and substitute Jeremy Doku again proved influential. In the final moments of stoppage time, Doku drove at the Villa defence, setting up Matheus Nunes who sealed the victory.
