The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly considering Jay Woodcroft, Jay Leach, Jeff Halpern, and Manny Malhotra for their vacant head coaching position. General Manager John Chayka plans to discuss the team’s strategy with Auston Matthews and will have until mid-July to present a viable plan.
Significant changes are expected on the Maple Leafs’ blue line. They are likely to explore whether Morgan Rielly would waive his no-movement clause and assess the trade value of Brandon Carlo. Additional needs include a third-line center, potentially a top-six forward, and a retooling of the fourth line. With approximately $24 million in cap space (excluding a potential $2.5 million for Gavin McKenna), and given the shallow free-agent market, the team is expected to actively pursue trade options. Vincent Trocheck’s name has surfaced as a potential target.
Meanwhile, the Minnesota Wild face considerable salary cap challenges. They require a top-six center and have roughly $15.4 million in projected cap space to fill eight roster spots. Several key players have trade protection: Ryan Hartman, Joel Eriksson Ek, and Jared Spurgeon possess 10-team no-trade clauses, while Marcus Foligno and Jake Middleton have 15-team clauses that become no-move clauses on July 1st. Jonas Brodin, Nico Sturm, and Yakov Trenin do not have such protections.
In other news, Quinn Hughes might sign a three-year extension this offseason, aligning his contract end date with his brother Jack’s. The Wild have pending RFAs Bobby Brink and Daemon Hunt, and their UFAs include Vladimir Tarasenko, Nick Foligno, Mats Zuccarello, Michael McCarron, Marcus Johansson, Robby Fabbri, Zach Bogosian, and Jeff Petry.
Decisions loom regarding these free agents. The Wild will assess if Zuccarello is willing to accept a reduced salary and role. McCarron could command $4-$5 million on the open market. Tarasenko served as a positive mentor for Danila Yurov. It’s uncertain if Bogosian would accept a league-minimum deal, and Fabbri and Petry are unlikely to return.
