NHL Rumors: The Origin of Brady Tkachuk Trade Speculation

Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period discussed the trade rumors surrounding Ottawa Senators forward Brady Tkachuk on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio. When asked about the source of these speculations, Pagnotta suggested it’s a combination of factors.

Jason Strudwick inquired whether the rumors stem from teams sensing an opportunity for Tkachuk to leave, or if they are inspired by past high-profile player movements like Quinn Hughes or Mitch Marner, or even Tkachuk’s brother Matthew wanting out of Calgary, suggesting a potential blueprint for similar situations.

Pagnotta explained that he believes it’s a bit of both. He noted that some teams are hearing whispers and are open to exploring potential conversations, referencing the Matthew Tkachuk trade as an example. Despite denials at the time, Matthew was eventually traded months later, illustrating that initial denials don’t always reflect future outcomes.

Pagnotta also pointed to the situation with Quinn Hughes as a relevant parallel. He mentioned that it was revealed much later that Hughes was not planning to sign an extension the previous summer, leading to his eventual trade. While Pagnotta doesn’t believe Tkachuk has explicitly stated he wants to leave the Senators, he suggests the rumors are fueled by a perception around the league that there might be an opportunity to pursue him at some point. This leads other teams to express interest and try to get their names in the mix, a trend Pagnotta expects to continue throughout the summer.

The Ottawa Senators captain, Brady Tkachuk, addressed the trade rumors upon his return to the city following a personal matter. He expressed frustration and annoyance at repeatedly answering questions about his future. While Tkachuk and the organization maintain that he does not wish to leave, there is ongoing speculation in the league, partly influenced by broader trends of player movement and even discussions about players like Auston Matthews potentially leaving Toronto, despite demonstrating loyalty.

All eyes remain on Ottawa as the offseason progresses. However, the focus intensifies for next offseason, as the Senators’ captain becomes eligible for an extension on July 1, 2027.

NHL Rumors: Where Are the Brady Tkachuk Trade Rumors Coming From?

Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period joined Sirius XM NHL Network Radio’s Power Play segment with Steve Kouleas and Jason Strudwick on Wednesday. There, he was asked about the trade rumors surrounding Ottawa Senators forward Brady Tkachuk and where they are originating from.

Jason Strudwick asked Pagnotta to clarify whether these discussions are happening because people are hearing there might be an opportunity for Tkachuk to leave, or if it’s because other players have moved, such as Quinn Hughes or Mitch Marner, or if Tkachuk’s brother, Matthew Tkachuk, wanted out of Calgary, and thus a “blueprint” is perceived for a similar outcome. Strudwick asked which of these he believed to be the source.

Dave Pagnotta stated, “In all honesty, Struds, I think it’s both. I think there are teams that are going to like, are hearing this chatter, and that they’re going to say, ‘Well, okay, let’s have the conversation.’ Maybe there’s an avenue here, because remember when Matthew Tkachuk was traded. I’m just using his as an example. It’s not because it’s his brother, just convenient, but not because of that. But there was talk that, the Flames were going to look to move him, and that was denied. Then GM Brad Treliving, at the time, said, ‘No, it’s not going to happen at the end of the season.’ And then he was moved in August.”

Pagnotta continued, “So, there are teams that are curious. There are teams that hear some chatter, and you brought up Quinn Hughes. I mean, that’s a decent enough example with respect to his future and the uncertainty there. We then find out via Jim Rutherford that it was last summer when they found out that he wasn’t going to sign an extension with the club, and that they tried to convince him otherwise.

It didn’t work, and then he was ultimately moved later on during the season. Does that apply here again? I don’t think that this is a scenario where he’s told the team he’s out by any stretch. I don’t want to put that narrative out there, but it certainly sounds like this is a combination of people and teams around the league believing that there’s going to be an avenue at some point to pursue him and others that are going well, if this is the case, we want to get our hat in the ring, and I think that will continue over the course of the summer.”

The Ottawa Senators captain, Brady Tkachuk, addressed the trade rumors on Wednesday when he returned to the city. He took the time after dealing with a personal matter. The Senators’ captain is reportedly getting frustrated and annoyed about having to answer the same questions about his future. While everyone will take his word that he doesn’t want to leave, and neither he nor the organization has stated he wants out, there is growing talk, given the current climate in the league. There is even talk about Auston Matthews potentially leaving Toronto, even as he continues to show his loyalty there.

Therefore, all eyes remain on Ottawa heading into this offseason, and even more so next offseason, as the Senators captain is eligible for an extension on July 1, 2027.
