The Toronto Maple Leafs face another offseason of uncertainty regarding winger Nick Robertson. After requesting a trade last year without success, Robertson is coming off a career-high season with 16 goals and 16 assists in 78 games, despite limited ice time. The Maple Leafs are in need of a right winger for Auston Matthews and a third-line center, making Robertson a potential trade chip in those efforts.
Robertson himself expressed a lack of clarity about his future: “I’m gonna, not gonna take a deep dive in my future, I don’t know what, what my future holds. But I will say that everyone here has been unbelievable with me, for my family, for me, guys here this year, I love these guys.”
Meanwhile, the Detroit Red Wings are on the cusp of a busy offseason filled with critical decisions. General Manager Steve Yzerman’s future with the team and potential management changes are among the top priorities. Beyond that, the Red Wings must determine whether to pursue significant roster overhauls or opt for minor adjustments.
A key need for the Red Wings is a top-line left winger. Should Patrick Kane depart as a free agent, the team will also need to find another top-six winger. While Emmitt Finnie shows promise as a potential top-six forward, he is not yet ready for that role.
The team also aims to strengthen its bottom six by adding more scoring and physicality. Enhancing the top six would naturally push existing depth players into more suitable roles. For the fourth line, the Red Wings could consider adding players with a more imposing presence, such as A.J. Greer or Michael McCarron.
Several players, including J.T. Compher, Mason Appleton, and Michael Rasmussen, could be subject to important decisions this offseason.
Alex DeBrincat is eligible for an extension this offseason, having just completed his first 40-goal season since 2008-09 and a career-high 85 points. His contract extension could potentially mirror Adrian Kempe’s $10.625 million deal as a benchmark.
Defenseman Simon Edvinsson, a pending RFA, is expected to receive a significant long-term contract. This deal could range around $9 million per year, or the team might opt for a shorter-term, lower-cost agreement. A long-term commitment is generally considered the more advantageous option.
