NHL Rumors: Maple Leafs’ No. 1 Pick, Senators Interested in DeBrusk, Red Wings and Pettersson

NHL News

Reports suggest the Toronto Maple Leafs may have already decided on their No. 1 pick for the 2026 NHL draft, with sources indicating they informed prospect Gavin McKenna of their intentions during the NHL combine.

Meanwhile, the Ottawa Senators are reportedly showing interest in Vancouver Canucks forward Jake DeBrusk. The 29-year-old forward has five years remaining on his contract with a $5.5 million cap hit and has consistently scored over 20 goals in recent seasons. DeBrusk has a full no-movement clause, giving him control over his destination, which could influence the return the Canucks receive. His clause is set to become a 15-team no-trade list next offseason, potentially encouraging Vancouver to move him even if it means a smaller return simply to shed his contract.

The Detroit Red Wings are also being discussed as a potential landing spot for Vancouver Canucks center Elias Pettersson, who might be looking for a change of scenery. The availability of Dylan Larkin could influence these dynamics. If the Red Wings are seeking a center after trading Larkin, they might consider Pettersson. Larkin’s cap hit is $8.7 million, while Pettersson’s is $11.6 million, with Pettersson having one more year on his deal. The Canucks might consider retaining some salary to facilitate a trade for prospects like Nate Danielson or Marco Kasper. A potential deal with the Los Angeles Kings for Pettersson would likely involve lesser prospects and multiple draft picks.
