The Columbus Blue Jackets Are Not Worried About Rick Bowness Extension

Hockey insider Elliotte Friedman recently addressed the situation surrounding a potential contract extension for Columbus Blue Jackets coach Rick Bowness.

Following a recent series of wins that propelled the Blue Jackets to second in the Metropolitan Division, the question of Bowness's extension has become a significant talking point. The team's notable improvement under his leadership, coupled with several key unrestricted free agents—including Charlie Coyle, Mason Marchment, and captain Boone Jenner—who might be seeking clarity, has fueled speculation about the delay in securing a new deal, especially if the team solidifies a playoff spot.

Friedman reported that Blue Jackets General Manager Don Waddell confirmed that discussions regarding Bowness's extension are intentionally scheduled for the end of the season. Waddell light-heartedly remarked that he and Bowness are the only two not concerned about the timing, indicating a calm and patient approach. Friedman acknowledged that while the front office seems relaxed, some unrestricted free agents might be eager for information about Bowness's long-term commitment. However, considering Bowness's evident passion for coaching and his successful return from what was akin to semi-retirement, Friedman believes an extension should not be difficult to achieve, provided negotiations remain realistic. Waddell is known for his patient negotiation style, as demonstrated with previous deals like Ivan Provorov's, which was finalized right before free agency last year.

Bowness was appointed on January 12th, 2026, and since then, the Blue Jackets have compiled a robust record of 19-3-4, a significant improvement from their earlier 19-19-7 standing before his arrival. GM Waddell consistently maintained his belief in the team's playoff potential, a conviction reinforced by strategic trades for players such as Marchment, Conor Garland, Coyle, and Miles Wood to bolster their competitive edge.
