When asked about the status of Bowness's extension, Friedman recounted his conversation with Blue Jackets General Manager Don Waddell. Waddell stated that he and Bowness have agreed to discuss the matter at the end of the season. He humorously added that they are the only two people who aren't worried about the timing, implying a mutual understanding and lack of urgency to finalize a deal sooner.

Despite the calm approach from management, Friedman noted that some of the team's unrestricted free agents, such as Charlie Coyle, Mason Marchment, and Boone Jenner, are interested in knowing whether Bowness will remain with the team next season. Given Bowness's known passion for coaching and the remarkable success the team has achieved under his leadership (an impressive 19-3-4 record), an extension seems highly probable, provided both parties approach negotiations with realistic expectations.

Waddell has a track record of not rushing contract negotiations, as exemplified by the Ivan Provorov deal which was finalized just before free agency last year. The Blue Jackets, despite an earlier 19-19-7 record, always believed they were a playoff-caliber team. Under Bowness, they have certainly lived up to that potential.
