New Jersey Devils’ Executive Search: One Position or Two?

NHL News

The New Jersey Devils are currently facing a crucial decision regarding their front office structure as they conduct their search for a new General Manager. There’s uncertainty about whether the team will opt to hire just a GM or if they will also bring in a President of Hockey Operations. This decision hinges on their willingness to invest in two high-level executives.

Sources indicate that the interview process has begun, involving an in-house committee that includes Bob Myers, the former Warriors GM, who is now part of the ownership group. This committee is expected to play a significant role in shaping the team’s future leadership.

There has been speculation about Brendan Shanahan’s potential involvement, with reports suggesting some interest. However, it’s understood that any agreement with Shanahan is far from finalized and could be complicated by financial considerations. If the Devils were to hire Shanahan, it would likely necessitate the simultaneous hiring of a GM, as they appear to be looking for external candidates rather than promoting from within to an interim role.

The team is reportedly considering Sunny Mehta, who has a history with the organization, and John Chayka, who is believed to have connections with the current ownership. If either of these candidates is appointed GM, the Devils might also seek a President of Hockey Operations. This role could be crucial for managing relationships, including with the Hughes family, ensuring player satisfaction, and serving as a public face for the team and its fanbase, addressing aspects beyond daily operations.

The team’s structure is not yet finalized, with discussions ongoing about whether to consolidate responsibilities into one role or split them between two. Tom Fitzgerald previously held both the GM and President of Hockey Operations titles. The upcoming decisions will be keenly watched as the Devils aim to build a strong leadership team.
