Leicester face being leapfrogged by Rangers in chase for first-choice manager target Russell Martin

Football News

Russell Martin is at the centre of a potential managerial battle between Leicester City and Rangers.

The 39-year-old, who was previously in charge at Southampton, is reportedly Leicester`s preferred candidate, as revealed last month, and is understood to be interested in the role.

Russell Martin is a target for both Rangers and Leicester.

Current Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy is hoping to remain in charge.

However, Scottish club Rangers (Gers), for whom Martin previously played on loan, have also included him on their managerial shortlist and he is reportedly very interested in a move to Ibrox.

Martin is currently awaiting contact from Ibrox, as the club is nearing a takeover by an American group with connections to Leeds.

A formal offer for a manager is difficult to make until the takeover deal is completed.

Leicester are also delaying a decision on their managerial situation for a few weeks, setting up a race to see which club makes a move for Martin first.

Lee Carsley has been mentioned in connection with the Leicester job, but the England Under-21 manager is reportedly unwilling to work in the Championship.

Meanwhile, Leicester`s current manager, Ruud van Nistelrooy, has stated he remains unsure about his future at the club.

Under his management, Leicester have won just three of their last 23 matches.

Despite speculation linking Sean Dyche with the King Power Stadium role, Van Nistelrooy has expressed his desire to stay.

A separate video shows Jamie Vardy emotionally announcing his departure from Leicester after 13 years, appearing close to tears.

Addressing his situation, Van Nistelrooy said: “It`s necessary to find alignment.

“The quicker, the better, for the best interests of the football club. That`s what I`m urging.

“We need to be on the same page.

“Over the past months, starting in February, I`ve had conversations with the board and the chairman, including discussions in March and recently.

“The club knows where I stand.

“I`ve always informed the club on how I see things, and the lessons learned now that it`s clear we will be in the Championship.

“We can move on to that scenario, but I`m still waiting for the club to respond. That`s where it stands now.

“I know what my plan is to move forward and bring the club back up with the people in this building.

“There are 60-70 great professionals here who can move the club forward.

“But I`m still waiting on that alignment.”
