The remarkable performance of John Tortorella as the interim head coach for the Vegas Golden Knights is raising questions about their long-term coaching strategy. Tortorella, currently on a contract that concludes at the end of the season, has significantly improved the team’s play. This success may complicate the Golden Knights’ original plans, which reportedly involved promoting AHL head coach Ryan Craig to the NHL bench.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman discussed this dynamic, noting that Vegas typically keeps its plans confidential. However, it’s understood that Ryan Craig, who has a long-standing relationship with General Manager Kelly McCrimmon, was being groomed for the head coaching position once Bruce Cassidy’s tenure ended. Craig’s time leading the Henderson Silver Knights was intended to provide him with valuable experience, and many believed he was slated to be the Golden Knights’ coach next season.
Despite the Henderson Silver Knights’ early playoff exit, observers who closely follow the AHL reportedly praised Craig’s performance and his development of prospects. The prevailing expectation was that Tortorella would finish out the current season, and then Craig would take over.
However, Friedman acknowledges the strong possibility that if Tortorella leads the Golden Knights to a Stanley Cup victory, removing him from the position would be a difficult decision. He further suggests that other NHL teams with head coaching vacancies might be keeping a close eye on Tortorella’s situation, recognizing his proven ability to revive a team and his contract status after June 30th. This unexpected success could force the Golden Knights to reconsider their predetermined coaching succession plan.
