Florida Panthers Acquire Brady Tkachuk in Major Trade

NHL News

The Florida Panthers made significant moves on Sunday leading up to the 2026 NHL Draft, with General Manager Bill Zito orchestrating a blockbuster trade to acquire forward Brady Tkachuk from the Ottawa Senators.

In exchange for Tkachuk, the Panthers are sending the 9th and 25th overall picks in the 2026 NHL Draft, a first-round pick in 2029, and a second-round pick in 2030 to the Senators.

Despite previous public statements suggesting otherwise, Tkachuk expressed a desire to be traded. Following a successful stint with Team USA, he reportedly presented management with a shortlist of preferred destinations and sought a move. It’s believed that his desire to play alongside his brother, Matthew Tkachuk, influenced this decision, with the camaraderie of the Team USA gold medal-winning squad potentially acting as a recruiting factor.

Sources indicated that discussions between the Panthers and Senators had been ongoing since Saturday night, with a strong sense of optimism on Florida’s side regarding the deal’s finalization.

Tkachuk, who has two years remaining on his current contract with an $8,105,714 annual cap hit, was reportedly looking for a team where he could contend for the Stanley Cup. Other teams on his trade wish list reportedly included the Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights, and Carolina Hurricanes. The Ottawa Senators, facing a difficult situation with their captain, managed to secure a substantial return.

This acquisition by the Panthers was facilitated by an earlier trade made by GM Bill Zito. Samoskevich was sent to the Seattle Kraken in exchange for the 25th pick in the 2026 Draft and a conditional second-round pick in 2026 (the higher of the Columbus or Winnipeg picks).

The addition of Brady Tkachuk strengthens the Panthers’ forward depth, complementing their existing center core of Aleksander Barkov, Anton Lundell, and Sam Bennett. This move signals Florida’s intent to make another strong push for the Stanley Cup.

Speculation continues regarding the Panthers’ next steps, particularly at the goaltending position. Questions remain about whether they will re-sign Sergei Bobrovsky or pursue a trade for a goaltender, with names like Connor Hellebuyck and Jordan Binnington being linked to the team. However, the team’s available trade assets, especially if Anton Lundell is considered immovable, will be a key factor in any further moves.

Further developments regarding the Florida Panthers’ roster moves will be closely watched.
