St. Louis Blues Reportedly Interested in Elias Pettersson

NHL News

Reports indicate that the St. Louis Blues are exploring the possibility of acquiring Vancouver Canucks center Elias Pettersson. This comes amid speculation that the Canucks are actively seeking to trade Pettersson’s contract due to ownership’s desire to reduce spending.

Journalist Rick Dhaliwal stated that the trade talks surrounding Pettersson are “real” and that the Canucks are aiming to move his contract if a suitable deal can be found. Dhaliwal has heard that the Blues are “sniffing around” Pettersson and he is investigating the veracity of this claim. The strategy, as understood, is that if the Canucks find a trade that makes sense for them, they would then present it to Pettersson’s agents, JP Barry and Pat Brisson, to gauge his willingness to waive his no-movement clause.

Don Taylor questioned the feasibility of moving Pettersson, given his substantial contract ($11.6 million for six more years) and perceived underperformance. Dhaliwal emphasized the current market demand for centers, noting that teams are “desperate” and believe they can unlock Pettersson’s potential to become an 80-point player, or even a point-per-game player, which would be considered a success by many NHL clubs.

The Canucks are reportedly not seeking a significant return and do not wish to take on a large contract in the $6-7 million range in exchange. Dhaliwal further elaborated that the Canucks ownership’s directive to spend less is a key factor. This aligns with recent organizational decisions, including management hires and projected costs for a new practice facility and potential buyouts of Aquilini brothers, which could amount to hundreds of millions of dollars.
