Elric Delord Celebrates Chalon’s Hard-Fought Victory in Paris: “We’re not the prettiest, but we have huge hearts”

In a game described as “a reflection of their season, with its ups and downs,” Chalon secured a prestigious win on the court of Paris Basketball this Saturday, with a final score of 105-103. This victory marks the first time Chalon has defeated all three Euroleague teams competing in the Betclic Élite league. The win came despite an impressive 36-point performance from Paris’s sharpshooter, Nadir Hifi.

Chalon’s strategic game plan, honed after a significant 40-point loss earlier in the season, was evident from the outset. They applied intense defensive pressure to disrupt Paris’s fast breaks, effectively limiting easy scoring opportunities in the first quarter. While Paris managed to stay close due to their three-point shooting, the score remained tight at the end of the first period (23-22) and at halftime (48-47), with Jeremiah Hill contributing 10 points in the second quarter.

“It’s a completely different team if you can slow them down,” explained Chalon coach Elric Delord post-game. “There are different ways to do that. But I also wanted it to align with our identity. That’s why, a priori, doing ‘run and jump’ and trapping players all over the court is utter madness against Paris. And that’s where the line between a stroke of genius and a foolish move is always very fine. If we can prevent them from getting into the paint as much as they’d like, they won’t get the three-point shots they desire afterward.”

Despite a strong first half, the third quarter proved challenging for Chalon. A series of turnovers, losing the ball 11 times, allowed Paris to build a 10-point lead after a put-back by Allan Dokossi (68-57) at the end of the period.

However, Chalon’s resilience and character shone through in the final quarter. The team, despite not being the “prettiest or biggest,” demonstrated immense heart and a fighting spirit. Facing a 10-point deficit, they rallied with courage and a belief in their ability to compete. Grant Golden ignited the comeback with 5 quick points, and Lionel Gaudoux tied the game with a hook shot. Justin Robinson then put Chalon ahead, but Jeremiah Hill’s three-pointer with 23 seconds left gave them a crucial advantage. Daulton Hommes managed to force overtime with a clutch free throw for Paris (88-88).

The overtime period saw Chalon start strong, with Mutts hitting an early three-pointer. While Paris, led by Nadir Hifi’s long-range shots, kept the game close, Chalon ultimately secured the victory. A difficult shot by Hifi at the buzzer fell short, sealing the win for Chalon in what was undoubtedly one of the season’s most exciting Betclic Élite games.

A standout performer for Chalon was Mathéo Leray, who contributed 20 points. He scored early in the game and made crucial three-pointers in overtime, helping Chalon maintain their lead. Coach Delord expressed pride in Leray’s performance, acknowledging his potential and the challenges he has overcome.

For Paris Basketball, the loss, while disappointing, could serve as a valuable learning experience heading into the playoffs. Coach Julius Thomas acknowledged the team’s expectation to win after leading by 10 points entering the final quarter. Player Enzo Shahrvin believes this type of close game will help them mature and progress.
