Edmonton Oilers Leaning Towards Mike Babcock as Next Head Coach

NHL News

The Edmonton Oilers’ leadership group appears to be firmly in favor of appointing Mike Babcock as their next head coach. Sources suggest that Babcock has already met with key figures within the organization, including owner Darryl Katz, other members of the Katz family, crucial players, President Jeff Jackson, and General Manager Stan Bowman.

This strong backing comes at a critical juncture for the Oilers, with the organization seemingly believing that any potential negative publicity surrounding Babcock is outweighed by the urgency to achieve a Stanley Cup victory. Owner Darryl Katz has a history of making decisive moves in such situations.

The Oilers are reportedly consulting with the NHLPA to address any potential objections before a formal hiring. This step is being taken in light of allegations regarding Babcock’s past conduct and invasion of player privacy, which led to his resignation as head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2023. Further investigation may be necessary.

Should Babcock be appointed, it is also suggested that D.J. Smith could join him on the coaching staff.

However, not all opinions are in favor of this potential appointment. Concerns have been raised about Babcock’s coaching record, with specific mention of his lack of playoff series wins since 2013. Some believe that his 2008 Stanley Cup victory alone is insufficient justification, especially when considering past player treatment and recent performance.
