Reports indicate that Wrexham is in negotiations to sign Fulham`s captain, Tom Cairney.
Following their third consecutive promotion, which brings them to the Championship, the club known as the Red Dragons might once again invest significantly in players.
Wrexham are in talks to sign Tom Cairney
The Fulham captain has made 27 appearances this season
Wrexham owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have spent big since taking over
The Telegraph suggests that Cairney is a new target for Wrexham, who have already been linked with several potential signings.
Discussions for the midfielder`s transfer have commenced. This potential acquisition would be one of Wrexham`s most ambitious yet, surpassing their £2 million record signing of Sam Smith in January.
Cairney`s contract expires in the summer, meaning he could join for free, although he is expected to command substantial wages.
As Wrexham prepares for their first season back in the second tier after 21 years, they are reportedly seeking experienced players, a profile that Cairney certainly fits.
He boasts extensive experience, having played 318 Championship matches, 412 top-flight games, and earned two caps for Scotland.
The 34-year-old Cairney featured in 27 matches this season, with 23 of those coming in the Premier League, predominantly as a substitute.
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson frequently recruits experienced players, having recently brought in individuals like Jay Rodriguez (35), James McClean (36), and Steven Fletcher (37).
Currently, Wrexham`s squad includes 11 players aged 30 or above, and more senior players could potentially join.
Jamie Vardy, who is leaving Leicester after 13 years, has also been rumoured as a potential target for the North Wales club.
Wrexham`s possible championship XI football lineup
Manager Phil Parkinson stated the club is “always planning” and, while not discussing specific individuals, confirmed they are looking at free agents fitting a particular player profile.
He remarked, “We haven’t really spoken about anything. We’ve always got our eye on players who are free transfers and are going to be available.
“I think it’s interesting because the jump in salaries is incredible, mind-blowing. Even coming up to this level, the jump to get players of Championship quality is expensive.
“But obviously the next level, I don’t think people outside football quite realise.
“They think players in League One must be multi-millionaires, but the drop-off from what people read in the press about Premier League players is huge.
“That is a challenge but what we’ve always tried to do is make sure the culture in the club is right.
“No superstars, no egos in the dressing room, and we’ve got to try to get that balance right again, to make sure the right people come into the building.”
