The future of Boston Bruins prospect James Hagens and the timing of his entry-level contract (ELC) continues to be a significant topic of discussion. Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period recently shed light on the Bruins’ internal deliberations during an appearance on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio.
Hagens, a potential first-round pick in 2025, is currently playing with the Providence Bruins in the AHL on an amateur tryout (ATO). The question arises whether he will transition to the NHL club this season, especially given the Bruins’ fluctuating playoff position.
According to Pagnotta, the Bruins’ decision-making process is complex. While the team considered Hagens as a potential impact addition before the trade deadline, a direct call-up would “burn a year” off his ELC. As a college free agent, signing him immediately would trigger the start of his contract.
The organization is carefully weighing the pros and cons of this move. Allowing Hagens to play out the rest of the season on an ATO with Providence enables them to sign an official ELC in the offseason, preserving a year on his contract. The Bruins are reportedly hesitant to risk an early ELC activation if the team’s playoff hopes remain uncertain. They want to assess their performance in the upcoming games before committing to a decision that could potentially use up a year of Hagens’ contract without a guaranteed deep playoff run. The urgency for the Bruins, Pagnotta noted, is to quickly determine if bringing Hagens in now is “worth the squeeze.”
